Among the possibilities that we can manipulate to achieve excellent sleep hygiene is the conditioning of our rest space, the provision of a bed and a good quality mattress and, of course, elements of bedding, or bed linen, with the which we can feel completely at ease. Today we will stop at the latter. We will see what type of elements make up bedding, how they are classified, what materials they are made of and how to choose them according to their functionality and quality.
First of all, we must realize that, throughout history, and depending on the different needs of each social group, countless elements have appeared that have accompanied the bed and mattress, from animal skins to material elements. technology used in space. However, nowadays, at least four types of elements that make up bedding have been utilitarian reaffirmed among all the people of the world: sheets, blankets or blankets, duvets, bedspreads or covers, and covers of pillows.
Sheets are undoubtedly the most important element of bedding, even more so than duvets or bedspreads. We can sleep without blankets in hot or humid weather, but it is very difficult and uncomfortable to sleep without a coating that isolates the skin of the body from the surface of the mattress.
This is the function of the sheets, to cover and protect the mattress, generating an isolation of its texture, in addition to serving as a surface on which the rest of the bedding will rest. Generally the sheets are divided in two. The bottom sheet: the one with elastic edges with which the mattress is wrapped and on which the skin of our body will rest; and the top sheet: the one that is laid on the lower bed and under which we will sleep, on it the rest of the bed linen will be laid.
To choose the best type of sheets, according to our needs, we must take into account two things, and they are not the same: fabric and fiber. Weaving is the way or pattern in which threads are woven together to make a fabric. The fiber is the material with which the thread is made. These characteristics also apply to pillowcases, which are made from the same fabric as the sheets and sold together with them in a complete group.
There are two types of raw material to spin the different textile fibers. There are natural materials, which in turn are divided into plants and animals. Among the vegetables we have cotton, one of the materials preferred for sheets fabrics for their soft touch and ability to absorb moisture, also bamboo, linen or coconut. Among the animal materials are worm silk, also preferred for its quality and sophistication, sheep wool or alpaca. On the other hand, we have the synthetic materials based on petroleum or chemically created components such as nylon, acrylics, polyester or dry fit, the latter has the ability to repel moisture or dry quickly.
There are many types of weaving or yarn weave patterns. The difference between these offers different sensations to the touch, it also exposes aesthetic textures in thin sheets generating shapes or patterns that enhance the eye-catching of the sheet. The most common fabrics are percale, in which a vertical and a horizontal thread are crossed, and satin, in which four vertical threads are crossed by one horizontal. In addition, we must take into account the number of threads per square inch, this will depend on the density of the fabric, the weight of the sheet, the heat retention and the breathability coefficient of the fabric. Inexpensive sheets have an average of 140 threads per square inch, medium quality sheets average 200 threads, but we can find fabrics of up to 400 threads.
The type of sheets you choose depends directly on the tastes of the sleeper. The different variables previously exposed, types of fiber, types of fabric and quantity of threads, will give us the possibility to play with the sensation to the touch, the retention of heat, the weight and the levels of breathability.
Blankets or blankets
Blankets are the heaviest and densest bedding items that are spread over sheets. Normally, we find them in wool or thick-gauge fibers, capable of generating wide and dense fabrics. Its function is, specifically, the thermal insulation between the sleeper and the environment, ensuring the retention of body heat. There are also quilts, which, unlike blankets, are made of two layers of textiles that house a filling inside, which generates greater heat retention for the sleeper.
Bedspreads or covers
These are the bedding that is laid on the blankets and its function is twofold: it offers an aesthetic dimension with a decorative purpose, and it protects the bed and its lines from the environment when not in use. There are, as might be expected, countless types of bedspreads or covers. They are generally built in different layers, with cotton fillings or heavy fibers, externally covered with fine fabrics and decorative and thematic fabrics. It is worth noting that the choice of bedspreads or bedspreads depends on the tastes of each person; however, there are two characteristics that can help us choose. The price and the aesthetic harmony that the bedspreads will have within the aesthetic style of our bedroom. If you don’t usually remove the coverlet from your bed, but instead sleep with it, you should also take into account the weight of the fibers and the weight of the quilt.
